Question 1

Q. Why is My SMTP Server Not Connecting?

Accepted Answer

Usually it's a port and encryption mismatch, a hosting provider blocking outbound SMTP ports, or a firewall on the server dropping the connection. The full error text narrows it down: a timeout points to a mismatch or a block, a refused connection points to the wrong port or host, and an SSL error points to encryption.

Question 2

Q. How Do I Connect to My SMTP Host?

Accepted Answer

Enter your provider's SMTP host, port, encryption setting, username and password in your SMTP plugin, then send a test email. Use 587 with TLS or 465 with SSL, whichever your provider documents. If the test fails with a connection error, test the port from your server before changing anything else.

Question 3

Q. How Do I Find My SMTP Host?

Accepted Answer

Your email provider publishes it in its SMTP documentation. Gmail and Google Workspace use smtp.gmail.com, Microsoft 365 uses smtp.office365.com, and Amazon SES uses a host that includes your account's region.

Question 4

Q. How Do I Fix an SMTP Error?

Accepted Answer

Start with the full error text, because it tells you which stage failed. A connection error such as "could not connect to SMTP host" means the server was never reached, so check the port, encryption and network path. A numbered reply such as 535 or 550 means the server answered, and it explains each code.

Question 5

Q. Is "SMTP Server Not Responding" the Same Error?

Accepted Answer

Yes. "SMTP server not responding", "failed to connect to SMTP server", "connection timed out," and "could not connect to SMTP host" all describe a connection that never opened. Different software words it differently, and some tools shorten it to "SMTP not responding". In WordPress, PHPMailer shows "could not connect to SMTP host", and the line beneath it gives the specific reason.
